What a year so far! Over the winter holidays I worked on designing and writing a book of Environmental Portraits of Environmental Leaders to showcase the people I have photographed over the last couple of years for El Mundo. With only three days before the school vacation ended, I put aside the book and wrote a play, The Last Play on Earth. After all, I had said I’d write it before school restarted. And I did. I included every single character that the kids at OAS Middle School wanted to be, from a Banana that yelled “Imagination land!” to secret agents and bees. I went on to do two re-writes and then to direct the play, which the kids performed on March 24 and 25th. It was a great success, and we want to do it again.

With all of these things going on, plus working on some video editing for Antioch University Santa Barbara, I hadn’t had much time for drawing, painting or sculpting. I got as far as to design the logo for The Last Play, and I even made some of the hats for the performances. But I was missing getting my fingernails dirty with oil pastels. I’ve taken the time of the spring break to make two oil pastel drawings, a small one on a block of wood and a large one on paper.

For the first one, I challenged myself to make one single orange interesting, not an easy task. I cropped the edge off on purpose, which later appeared on the side of the block. The latter drawing is a self-portrait titled, “I’ve Seen Clouds.” But now I’m out of blue and orange; time to go to the art store!

¡Qué año llevo! Durante las fiestas de invierno, trabajé en diseñar y escribir un libro de Retratos Ambientales de Líderes Ambientales. para mostrar la gente que he fotografiado en el último par de años, principalmente para El Mundo. Cuando quedaban tres días para que se acabaran las vacaciones, dejé a un lado dicho libro para escribir una obra de teatro, La Última Obra de la Tierra. Me había prometido que la acabaría antes de que empezaran las clases. Y así lo hice, incluyendo todos los personajes que los niños de OAS Middle School querían ser, desde un Plátano que gritaba “¡La tierra de la imaginación!” hasta agentes secretos y abejas. Escribiría dos grandes revisiones más antes de dirigir la obra, que representaron los niños el 24 y 25 de marzo. Fue un gran éxito y queremos hacerlo de nuevo.

Con todas estos proyectos entre manos, además de hacer edición de vídeo para Antioch University Santa Barbara, no había tenido tiempo libre para dibujar, pintar o esculpir. Llegué a diseñar el logotipo y ha hacer los gorros de papel de La Última Obra. Pero echaba de menos mancharme las uñas con ceras al óleo. He tomado unas cuantas horas de las vacaciones de primavera para hacer dos dibujos, uno pequeño sobre madera y uno grande sobre papel.

Para el primer, me puse el reto de hacer que una sola naranja sea interesante, lo cual no es fácil. Le corté un trozo por un lado, que luego apareció en el borde. El segundo es un autorretrato, titulado, “He Visto Nubes”. Pero me quedé sin azul y naranja; ¡hora de ir a la tienda!
