I had promised a new piece of art per day this week. I’m happy to say that I’m working on one more self-portrait, in red. Read more
The piano in progress.
Thanks to Facebook (I admit that FB is good for something), I found out that the Granada Theater was looking for artists to paint pianos. It was late at night on Sunday when I learned this. I called Laura Inks at the Granada first thing Monday morning, and the next thing I knew, I was painting a piano. The painted pianos initiative will promote the Granada’s musical instrument drive, in which they collect used musical instruments and then donate them to schools and kids in need (of an musical instrument). Last year they collected hundreds.
I’m so happy to be part of this project. This is one more reason why I love Santa Barbara. The decision to paint a piano was sudden. I always like a challenge. Besides, I didn’t want to go to my grave thinking that I had missed this chance of being musical. I definitely didn’t want my tombstone to read, “Here lies Isaac, he never painted a piano.” That’s why I’m donating my body for science, or for fish food -I haven’t made up my mind yet. One thing is certain, I hope that my useful organs will get taken advantage of by someone else in need, like these pianos.
If you want to paint a piano tomorrow, let me know. The pianos will be exhibited during the weekend, with an opening happening on Santa Barbara First Thursday November 2010. The pianos go to schools afterwards. I believe this one will go to Open Alternative School.
